Scholarship Application

Overview

The ESFNA Scholarship Program provides financial support to outstanding students of Ethiopian origin who are currently pursuing or intend to pursue higher education in an accredited institution. The program pays $5000 each for two categories of applicants: Category 1, Player Scholarship, for ESFNA rostered players; and Category 2, Non-player Scholarship, for all other students of Ethiopian origin who are not eligible for a player scholarship. Six scholarship recipients will be selected each year with the top three applicants in each category receiving awards in the amount of $2500, $1500, and $1000. The money will be paid directly to the applicant's institution at the beginning of the school year.

Eligibility

Player Schoarship

  • The applicant must be a rostered ESFNA player at the time of the application.
  • The individual must be accepted into an accredited college or university, community college or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued.
  • Past winners are not eligible.
  • Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, is currently ranked 29 out of 52 African countries in FIFA world soccer ranking. Ethiopia was a soccer power in Africa in the 1960s but her standing has steadily declined in the last four decades. • Non-Player Schoarship

  • The applicant must not be a rostered ESFNA player at the time of the application.
  • The applicant must have a 3.0 or above GPA
  • The individual must be accepted into an accredited four-year college or university at the time the award is issued.
  • Graduate students are not eligible.
  • Past winners are not eligible.
  • Write an Essay on the following topic: In 2008, the world witnessed an historic event by the election of Barack Obama as the first African American president of the United States. Explain your thoughts about this historic event and what it means to African Americans of Ethiopian origin and Ethiopians in general?
  • PS. The scholarship check will be made out and mailed to the college or to the student if ESFNA's scholarship will not be a net gain.

    Evaluation criteria

All applicants for scholarships are evaluated according to their academic ability and appreciation of Ethiopian values. Applicants are required to respond to essay question(s) related to Ethiopia and Ethiopian values. The essay question (s) will be posted annually on the ESFNA website. Player applicants have the option of responding to the essay question(s) in either English or Amharic. Non-player applicants must respond in English.

The essays are judged by a committee of impartial post secondary educators/scholars who are not affiliated with any ESFNA club. An initial administrative review of applications is conducted by the ESFNA Scholarship committee to determine eligibility of the applicants and completeness of the applications. A panel of at least three post secondary educators/scholars will individually review and rate the essays using a letter grade (A-D, or 4-1). The panel will also rate the institutions the applicants will be attending using the same letter grade. The scholarship committee will select the winners based on the combined average grade of the institution, the essay and the GPA. Essay and GPA will be weighted 40% of the total grade each and the quality of institution will be weighted 20%. [Example: An applicant, who receives a C for his essay, a B for his institution and has a GPA of 3.0, will have a combined average grade of 2.6 (2x40%+3x40%+3x20%).] The winners will be required to submit their official transcript for verification and maybe interviewed prior to receiving their awards.
